The Mansfield Librarians Wordle- What We Do in a Day!

The Mansfield Librarians Wordle- What We Do in a Day!
Recently, Mansfield librarians discussed what our typical work day entails.Pam Pinkerton, librarian at Legacy High School, took all of the descriptions listed by librarians and created a Wordle.

A Wordle, http://www.wordle.net/, is an online program that creates word clouds by taking all of the text entered into the program and using the words that appear most often in the text.  The more often the word appears in the list, the larger the word appears in the finished Wordle. It is a great tool for the classroom, because it captures key points, introduces new vocabulary and creates spelling lists.

The Mansfield Librarians Wordle- What We Do in a Day! gives a great visual of the impact that librarians have on their campus everyday!

Scholastic Book Fair is coming!

A Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school from November 14 to November 18, and students  will have a preview of the Fair on Monday and Tuesday. It’s a great opportunity for students to find books that really interest them. We know kids read more books when they get to choose their own. The more kids read, the more their reading skills improve

If for some reason you can’t make it or you want to continue shopping from an expanded selection, you can now visit the Fair online – www.scholastic.com/schoolbookfairs.

The Online Book Fair will be available from November 15 to December 05, 2011.

The online Fair:
·         is available for an extended time and all orders ship FREE to school
·         provides a chance for you and your child to create and send wish lists to invite friends and family to participate in the Book Fair
·         offers an expanded book selection for all ages—from preschool to adult.

All in-school and online Book Fair purchases benefit our school. Thanks for helping get more kids reading, kids reading more.

See you at the Book Fair!

Texas History Project

Texas Native Americans Tribes

During October, our 7th grade students were very busy learning and teaching their classmates about Texas Native American tribes. Students had the opportunity to visit with Mrs. Smith, the librarian, to learn about the six steps in the research process (Big Six) to complete the classroom assignment that required them to create a poster or a power point presentation about a Texas Indian tribe.
Students did a great job in using the library resources to complete their assignments. They also included citations for the encyclopedias, books and websites that they used! The students enjoyed learning about the state that they live in, as well as the traditions and environmental conditions of native Texans during the 1800s.
If you wish to see their terrific work, stop by the display cases located at entrance of the school and check it out!

Elements Facebook Project

Eighth grade science students had the opportunity to integrate their interest in social networking and knowledge of elements on the period table to create a "Fake"book page.  Mrs. Webster, science teacher, collaborated with Mrs. Smith, librarian, to design a creative research project that integrated science curriculum, information literacy and technology skills.

The objective of the project was to have students use the research process (Big 6) to learn about the elements on the period table, their atomic structure, properties, and formation of compounds (chemical reactivity). Students were required to create an element's Facebook profile using a power-point template or design a poster that included a Works Cited page. As you can see below students did a great job!
